Researchers conducted a randomized controlled trial with business administration students to examine the impact of using generative AI on knowledge retention.

The results showed that approximately 75% of students in the traditional learning group scored higher than the average student in the AI group.

The average study time for the AI group was 3.2 hours, approximately 45% shorter than the traditional group's 5.8 hours. AI may contribute to time savings and efficiency.

However, a consistently negative impact of AI use on knowledge retention was observed regardless of the type of content.

Furthermore, proficiency with AI did not affect the results.

Learners in the AI group tended to skip tasks such as independently retrieving and organizing information.

This is known as "cognitive offloading"—when placed in an environment where external tools are readily available, people tend to stop making the effort to think for themselves.

It also contributes to the exclusion of "desirable challenges"—the process of independently recalling answers and grappling with difficult problems during learning promotes long-term memory retention, but AI reduces these situations.

If AI takes over this process, learners may only achieve a superficial understanding and rapidly forget what they've learned over time.

From the perspective of long-term knowledge retention, the use of generative AI has been suggested to hinder learning.

　このプロセスをAIが代行してしまうと、学習者はあくまで表面的な理解にとどまり、時間が経つにつれて学習内容を急速に忘れていく可能性があります。

　長期的な知識の定着という観点では、生成AIの使用が学習の妨げになりうることが示唆されています。
